Getting Started In The Ocean Liner Business
The ocean liner business is a multi-billion dollar industry that is dominated by the big cruise ship lines and the luxury liner companies. There are many small operators in this industry, but you would be surprised to find out how few actually make a profit. The reason is simple. They are not large enough, or they do not focus on the right market. As a result, their income is highly dependent on tourist dollars that come in and they rarely look beyond that market to try and make any money from the other passengers that board their ships.
So, why is it that so few people realize that there is money to be made in the ocean liner business? Well, the main reason is that most of us live in a rather small community and we fail to take advantage of the opportunities that exist with out our towns. Most of us do not know anyone who owns or runs a commercial aviation enterprise and we do not understand the dynamics of the businesses that are out there taking care of our air travel needs.
Many of us have never boarded a cruise ship and have no idea what happens on those ships. For that matter, we have never even taken a flight in an airplane. But that does not mean that we are not aware of the ocean liners and cruise ships that are constantly traveling the world delivering millions of vacationers to their destinations. We are aware that these ships carry cargo from one destination to another. And we also are aware that they call at least some of their passengers "passengers" because they are not paying any taxes on their travels and lodging.
So, the first opportunity for a new entrepreneur entering the ocean liner business comes from the smaller companies. You must remember that the smaller companies do not have the same overhead as the larger cruise lines do. For that matter, you do not have to buy a huge vessel to start your own company. You can pick up a personal yacht or use an old skipper. In fact, many of these companies are run by individuals who have had previous ocean liner experience and know all about the operation. All you need is to find them.
What are some of the other opportunities? Well, there are also cargo and security at sea, which are not related to passenger shipping. Again, we have to keep in mind that the fastest ocean liners are not necessarily the shortest. And if you want to make your mark on this industry you really have to think outside the box. One idea is repositioning cruises.
Repositioning cruises are simply the scheduling of one of these ocean liner voyages to a different destination. If you take cargo and passengers from one port to another and arrange the voyage the way you want it, you can earn money on these voyages. The faster you can get your voyages arranged the more money you will make. And the best part about these repositioning cruises is that you do not have to handle any cargo or passengers. As long as the voyage goes according to plan you can forget about it.
